Enzo Maresca has just completed his post-match press conference following Chelsea's 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Lincoln City.
The Blues are through to the fourth round of the competition, but it was far from convincing at the LNER Stadium. Maresca, though, was pleased with how his side fought back from a goal down in Lincolnshire. Here is every word the Chelsea head coach had to say:
What did you think of the first-half versus the second-half?
- Buonanotte shines, George improves, Jorgensen sloppy - Chelsea player ratings vs Lincoln
- Five Chelsea wonderkids that Enzo Maresca could call upon for Lincoln City Carabao Cup clash
I think the first-half, we knew already, we were aware of the game that we expect in terms of long balls, duels, throw-ins, free-kick, every time inside the box. I know that some of them, they didn't play these kind of games, I asked today how many of them they play against, you know, League One team, because you need to know a different kind, you need to play a different kind of game, it's not the same game, because the desire is double from them, from duels, these kind of things. We struggled in the first-half, I think in the second-half we were much better.
Alarmed with Filip Jorgensen's performance?
I think that, I don't know how many balls they put inside the box tonight, you know, throw-ins, free-kick, cross, so I think it was not easy for any goalkeepers, to be honest. And I think overall, even, you know, we conceded against Brentford in extra time from throw-ins, it's not easy, it's not easy because they bring so many players inside the box, they try to create chaos around the goalkeepers, so you cannot move, you cannot go out, you cannot catch the ball, it's difficult.
And also, you know, for Filip, I think it was the first game of the season, so not easy, but at the end, again, we won the game, I was very worried about this game.
And the performance of Buonanotte must have been pleasing...
Yeah, Buonanotte was very good. I think first-half, we all struggled a little bit, second-half I think we were much, much better.
Why do you think that was?
Second-half, half-time, we changed something tactically that I think has been important. Jorrel [Hato] was playing in a different position compared to the first-half, I think we were also lucky that we scored immediately after the second-half, but the structure, the shape of the team between first-half and second-half was completely different, and that probably helped a little bit.
And so you spoke about tactical changes and changing the structure at half-time, did you have to deliver a bit of a message as well? Any angry words?
Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely.
Just how angry?
Absolutely, absolutely [laughs]. No, because we prepared the game thinking exactly in the way it was the first-half, and sometimes it's not about desire, it's about winning second ball, but it's also about experience. Jamie Gittens never played against League One [teams], these kind of games. Jorrel never played this kind of game. This kind of game, you have to play in a different way, you have to play in a different way. It's more about desire, and we struggled in the first half.
Is that something they have to learn, or is that something you can tell them to prepare for?
No, I don't know. If the next game in Carabao is again against the team League One, League Two team away, for sure tonight the experience will be good for the next one. So, we need this experience. We need it. Also, because you know already about the age, the experience, players that never played this kind of games. So, tonight has been good also because we won the game.
