Premier League release Chelsea vs Man Utd penalty statement as VAR decision explained

Chelsea saw a penalty overturned during their Premier League clash against Manchester United following an incident involving Tyrique George and Andre Onana.

After a great ball through by Moises Caicedo, the Blues youngster appeared to just get the ball past Onana with the United goalkeeper then taking him out. Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot but was then recommended to look at the pitchside monitor by VAR lead Craig Pawson.

Discussing the talking point, Alan Smith said on Sky Sports commentary: "Just as we were talking about changing the centre-forward, the youngster, has he come good here or has he taken a fall? Onana knows which it is.

"Certainly, George gets a little toe to it but after that... I think it's a dive. Maybe anticipating the contact. 'Keeper certainly gets something of the ball. I don't think this is going to stand, you know. I don't think this is going to stand.

After taking a few looks at the incident, Kavanagh overturned his initial decision with the Premier League then releasing a statement on why the change was made.

The Premier League Match Centre on X wrote. " – 61’ VAR OVERTURN VAR checked the referee’s call of penalty for the challenge by Onana on George and recommended an on-field review – with Onana deemed to have played the ball. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball."

Marc Cucurella softened the blow of not having a penalty when he headed home the opener after a great cross by Reece James.
