A newly opened café owned by Indian comedian Kapil Sharma in Surrey, British Columbia, came under attack on the night of July 9, as multiple gunshots were fired at the premises. While no injuries were reported, the incident has raised serious concerns among the local Indian community and drawn attention from both Canadian and Indian authorities.
Named Kap’s Café, the establishment had only recently been launched by Sharma and his wife, Ginni Chatrath, and had quickly attracted popularity within the Indo-Canadian community. The comedian had reportedly been present during the soft launch of the café a few days before the incident.
Nine Shots Fired At Café
According to the Surrey Police, at least nine rounds were fired at the café and nearby residential structures. Bullet holes were visible on the restaurant’s façade, and shell casings were recovered at the scene. The area was immediately sealed off, and a forensic investigation was initiated. Surveillance footage is currently being reviewed as part of the probe.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show a man firing from a moving vehicle at the site. While police have yet to verify these clips, they are being treated as part of the ongoing investigation.
Babbar Khalsa International Operative Claims Attack
Responsibility for the shooting was claimed by terrorist Harjit Singh Laddi, an alleged member of the banned Khalistani outfit and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). In an online statement, Laddi claimed the attack was prompted by comments allegedly made by Sharma in the past. Authorities have not disclosed the specific nature of the remarks referenced.
Laddi, a native of Nawanshahr in Punjab, is currently listed among India’s most wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). He is also accused in the April 2024 killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Vikas Prabhakar, also known as Vikas Bagga, in Rupnagar, Punjab. The NIA had earlier filed a chargesheet naming Laddi and Pakistan-based BKI chief Wadhawa Singh in connection with that case.
Agencies monitoring situation
Canadian law enforcement continues to investigate the shooting, while Indian intelligence agencies are closely monitoring developments, given the potential implications of Khalistani-linked violence overseas. Authorities are also examining whether the incident was part of a broader pattern of threats issued by extremist elements against Indian nationals abroad.
Kapil Sharma, who is currently hosting the third season of The Great Indian Kapil Show on Netflix, has yet to release a public statement. Meanwhile, his wife Ginni Chatrath had previously shared a message thanking patrons for their support of the café, just days before the attack.
