India put up a strong performance on the first day of the Para Powerlifting World Cup by winning four medals including one gold, one silver, and two bronze. The tournament features top para powerlifters from over 40 countries and is a qualifying event for the 2026 World Championships and the 2028 Paralympic Games.

Gulfam Ahmad opened India's account with a bronze medal in the highly competitive men's elite 59kg category. He lifted 145kg in his first attempt and followed it up with a best of 151kg in his second attempt. Gulfam's third attempt of 153kg was disallowed but his second was enough to give India its first medal of the tournament.
In the men's elite 72kg category, Ramubhai Bambhwa added another bronze to India's account by lifting 151kg in his first attempt. Though his next two attempts of 155 and 156kg were disallowed, the opening attempt earned him a place on the podium. Veteran weightlifter Joby Matthew performed brilliantly in the masters category. He won gold in total weight and silver for best weight. After an unsuccessful start of 140 kg, he made a comeback by lifting 145 and 150 kg.
Record improved in 3000-meter race.
Long-distance runners shone on the first day of the three-day 23rd National Junior (Under-20) Federation Athletics Championship, which started on Sunday at the Madan Mohan Malaviya Sports Complex. In the morning session, eight male runners improved the previous record of the competition in the 3000-meter race. Kavinraj S of Tamil Nadu also won the gold medal in the men's pole vault event by breaking Kuldeep Kumar's previous competition record of 5.10 meters. He finished first with 5.11 meters.
In the men's 3,000-meter race, eight runners improved the previous competition record of 8:26.72 set by Ajay in 2021 in Sangrur, Punjab. However, Vinod Singh of Madhya Pradesh left his rivals behind and won the gold medal with a timing of 8:14.22 seconds. Himanshu of Haryana won the gold medal in the men's 100-meter race with a timing of 10.49 seconds. Nipam of Uttar Pradesh won the women's 100-meter race with a timing of 11.86 seconds.
