Actress Malavika Mohanan shared a horrifying incident that took place when she would travel to her college in Mumbai in local trains. She recalled how a stranger had asked her for a kiss, and highlighted that the city is not safe for those countless women who step out in public every day.
During a conversation with Hauterrfly, Malavika stated that today, she feels safe in Mumbai or any other city, because she has her own car and driver, but that is not the case for every woman out there. "People often say Mumbai is safe for women, but I would like to correct that perception. Today, I have my own car and a driver. So if someone asks me if Mumbai is safe, I might say yes," she averred.
She then went on to recall the chilling incident from when she was in college. "I remember once I and two of my closest friends, we were coming back in a local train, and I think it was 9.30 pm, and we were in first class. So, the compartment was quite empty. There was actually nobody else except for the three of us. We were sitting close to one of the window grills. And this man, just like he sees the three girls sitting, comes very close to the grill, kind of sticks his face on the grill, and he’s just like, ‘Ek chumma degi kya? (Will you give me a kiss)?'," the actress shared.
She went on to say, "The three of us just froze. At that age, you don't even know how to retaliate in those situations? What if he just jumps inside the train?"
Malavika added that this was just one instance and that every woman travelling in public will have countless such stories of harassment and eve-teasing.
Earlier, actress Aaditi Pohankar had shared a similar story wherein she had revealed that a young boy had groped her while she was travelling in Mumbai local, and the cops refused to even believe her later.
Meanwhile, on the work front, Malavika is gearing up for the release of her Telugu debut opposite Prabhas in the film, The Raja Saab. The horror-comedy was slated to release on April 10, however, it was pushed due to multiple delays. The new release date has not been announced yet.
