Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Already famous as India’s “cleanest city,” Indore is now set to turn into the country’s first true “digital city.”

In a landmark move, Indore has become the first city in the country to link its new digital address system to the national DigiPIN platform.

Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav launched the pilot phase of the innovative “Digital Pata” (digital address) service in Ward 82’s Sudama Nagar area on Sunday. The initiative features unique QR-code-based address plates for every house, marking the beginning of a new era in e-governance and citizen services.

Addressing the gathering at the inauguration ceremony, the Mayor said: “This day will be written in golden letters in Indore’s history. Today, Indore begins its journey towards becoming a truly digital city. Clean Indore is now moving to the next level with Digital Indore.”

He added with emotion that Sudama Nagar was like “Kashi and Varanasi” to him, calling it a sacred starting point for Indore’s digital revolution. He urged residents to show their support by updating their mobile display pictures with the new digital address profile for the next seven days.

Digital address system

Under the new system, every house in Sudama Nagar will receive a unique QR-code-based digital address plate. When scanned, the QR code will open a secure online page with essential details about the property’s address and services. This system aims to simplify bill payments for utilities like water and property tax, allow residents to file complaints or request certificates online and provide precise location data for emergency services such as ambulances or fire brigades.

Municipal commissioner Shivam Verma said, “Each digital address will have a QR code plate on the house front. This will hold basic, secure details of the property. Privacy is built in—personal data like names or mobile numbers will be visible only to the resident.”

The system is designed to work better than GPS for locating addresses during emergencies, with pre-recorded geo-coordinates helping services reach the right spot faster.

Indore joins national DigiPIN platform

Indore is India’s first city to integrate this local digital address system with the Centre’s DigiPIN platform. Developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, NRSC and ISRO, DigiPIN assigns every property a precise, unique digital code.

The move is part of Indore’s broader digitization strategy. Bhargav also announced that the IMC had already digitized over one crore documents. Work was underway to launch Indore’s own municipal services portal by the end of August.

Future plans and announcements

On this occasion, the Mayor also declared plans to install a statue of Bharat Ratna former Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee along the new model road connecting Annapurna Road to Sudama Nagar.

He further promised that a new drainage system for Sudama Nagar would commence after the monsoon season.
