Maharashtra Heatwave Alert: 12 Wards Set Up Across Palghar's Sub-District And Rural Hospitals Amid Rising Heatstroke Cases

Send Push

Palghar, Maharashtra: With the mercury steadily rising since March, Palghar district has seen a noticeable rise in heatstroke cases. In response, 12 dedicated heat stroke wards have been set up across sub-district and rural hospitals to offer specialized care for patients affected by the extreme heat.

These wards have been established at three sub-district hospitals, Jawhar, Kasa, and Dahanu, along with nine rural hospitals located in Mokhada, Wada, Vikramgad, Manor, Palghar, Boisar, Vangaon, Talasari, and Virar.

Since their launch in early April, these facilities have been receiving between four to ten patients daily. Fortunately, Palghar District Civil Surgeon Dr. Ramdas Marad confirmed that no critical cases have been reported so far.

Dr. Marad explained that heatstroke, also known as sunstroke, is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures or strenuous physical activity in the heat, leading to the body overheating. To prevent heatstroke, he advises frequent consumption of oral rehydration solutions (ORS), lemon water, and plain drinking water.

He also stressed the importance of avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun and consuming water-rich fruits like coconut water, watermelon, muskmelon, and cucumber. In case of severe symptoms, patients should be immediately taken to the nearest rural or sub-district hospital for treatment, he added.

As Zilla Parishad school examinations continue until April 28, children are required to attend classes during peak summer heat. School authorities have been urged to ensure a constant supply of clean drinking water, working fans, and basic first-aid kits on campus.

Dr. Marad also pointed out that young children often neglect drinking enough water, making it essential for schools and parents to encourage regular hydration to safeguard against heatstroke.

Meanwhile, the talukas of Jawhar and Mokhada are grappling with acute water shortages, forcing many women to walk long distances under the harsh sun to collect water. In these conditions, Dr. Marad advises carrying lemon water or ORS during such treks, and using a water-soaked cotton cloth to cover the head for protection from the heat.

Facilities at Heat Stroke Wards:

The heat stroke wards have been equipped to handle the rising number of cases with the following provisions:

Adequate bed capacity based on patient inflow.

Well-ventilated rooms with air conditioners and fans.

Immediate availability of IV sets, stands, and ORS packets.

Backup power through generators to ensure uninterrupted care, even during power cuts.

These measures aim to offer timely care and minimize health risks as the district braces for the full intensity of summer.
