Mumbai Coastal Road Project: Feasibility Report Approves Helipad Construction At Worli Jetty; BMC To Seek Regulatory Clearances

Mumbai: The consultant appointed to assess the feasibility of constructing a helipad at Worli Jetty has submitted a positive report, confirming that the site is suitable for landing medium-sized helicopters. Following this development, the civic body is set to initiate the process of obtaining mandatory clearances from key regulatory authorities, including the Home Department, Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Defence Ministry, and the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Authority.

Acting on the directive of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to explore the possibility of setting up a helipad along the Mumbai Coastal Road, the BMC appointed Pawan Hans Ltd.—a Government of India enterprise—as the consultant to conduct a feasibility study for a helipad at Worli Jetty.

A senior civic official confirmed that the consultant has approved converting the temporary Worli jetty into a helipad. “We now need CRZ clearance, along with approvals from the Defence Ministry and other government agencies,” the official said. The feasibility report, which assessed structural, logistical, and environmental aspects, found the site suitable for development.

The other approvals that will be required for the project include security and administrative clearances from the Home Department, aviation safety and airspace compliance from the DGCA, and environmental clearance under CRZ norms due to the jetty’s location in a sensitive coastal zone etc, said civic sources.

The temporary jetty opposite Worli Dairy was built for the Coastal Road project. Initially, two jetties were constructed—one near Amarsons Garden, which was later dismantled, and the other at Worli. The Worli jetty was retained after the coastal police requested space for surveillance operations
