Mumbai: A 78-year-old woman from Malabar Hill has filed a complaint with the Malabar Hill Police, alleging that her domestic help fled with foreign currency amounting to £1,240 (approx. ₹1.4 lakh) from her home.
According to the complainant, Sajani Ramesh Sadrangani, a resident of Mehrina Building, Simla House Road, Malabar Hill, she had been residing at the stated address with her family. Her elder son, Amar (50), lives with her, while her younger son, Vivek, resides in Africa.
Due to her old age, she hired a domestic worker named Anita Chramako (39) on April 4, 2025. Anita hails from Karbi Anglong, Assam, and had been working at the Sajani Sadrangani's residence since then.
On April 12, around 12:30 p.m., Amar had left his bedroom door open while going to the bathroom. He had placed £1,240 and his passport on the bed in his room. At that time, only Sajani and Anita were present in the house. When Amar returned from the bathroom, he found only the passport on the bed, and the cash was missing.
The family searched the house and questioned Anita multiple times, but she denied taking the money and gave evasive responses. On April 17, Anita left the house claiming she was going to buy milk and never returned.
After further inquiries failed to trace her, the family approached the Malabar Hill Police Station on April 18. Based on the complaint, a theft case has been registered against Anita Chramako, who is now absconding. Police have launched a search for the accused.
