Bijnor: In a tragic incident that exposes the growing crisis of rural indebtedness in Uttar Pradesh, a family of four in Bijnor’s Noorpur area consumed poison after being overwhelmed by mounting debt and pressure from moneylenders. The mother and elder daughter died on the spot, while the father and younger daughter are battling for their lives at a higher medical centre.
The incident took place in Tendra village, where Pukhraj, a marginal farmer, had reportedly taken loans from local moneylenders to sustain his family. With no institutional financial support or meaningful state intervention, the burden of repayment and mounting interest became unbearable.
The deceased have been identified as Rameshiya and her elder daughter Anita. Pukhraj and his younger daughter Sunita remain in critical condition.
According to neighbours and local sources, the family had been under severe psychological distress due to persistent harassment and threats from lenders. Economic instability, lack of job opportunities, and rising rural inflation are believed to have contributed to the family’s worsening condition.
Police officials arrived at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The bodies were sent for post-mortem, and an investigation has been initiated into the circumstances that led to the suicide attempt.

The absence of debt relief or structured intervention from state authorities continues to push vulnerable families into irreversible despair.
