Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has taken on a new role with Under Armour on the eve of the new Premier League season. After learning of the news, though, some fans have argued his focus should be on winning trophies rather than any off-field matters.
"Arteta will bring his insights, unique outlook and deep understanding of sport and its athletes to oversee and shape Under Armour’s journey in football and beyond," the company said in a release confirming the appointment of Arteta as brand ambassador and director of performance. "The partnership represents a powerful alignment with Under Armour’s belief, values and commitment to developing the next generation of athletes."
It comes as the Spaniard's Arsenal team look to improve on last season's runner-up finish and finally win a first league title under Arteta. While there is no suggestion the new role will distract from his responsibilities in North London, some have had fun at his expense.
"Focus on signing more players and actually winning a trophy this season yeah Mikel," wrote one. "Bro is completing side quests instead of signing a left winger," said another.
"Understand Under Armour are looking forward to becoming the 2nd biggest sportswear company in the world," joked a third, alluding to Arteta's three straight runner-up finishes in the Premier League. A fourth was even more brutal, saying "So now he can leave to work there and let the Arsenal get a proper manager."

“The collaboration with Under Armour is the perfect opportunity for me to work with a partner committed to making young athletes better," Arteta said after his new role was announced. “I’m passionate about providing a platform for the next generation of players coming through in football and the top level of talent already signed with the brand demonstrates that Under Armour is too.
“We share the same mentality in always striving for more by finding new ways to innovate and disrupt the game at the top level. Our values in pursuing greatness are closely aligned and together, I'm confident we’re going to achieve great things in football.”
On the pitch, Arsenal are gearing up to take on Manchester United in their Premier League opener on Sunday. Both teams won their final warm-up friendly, with United beating Fiorentina on penalties and Arsenal claiming a 3-0 victory over Athletic Club.
New £64million signing Viktor Gyokeres scored his first Gunners goal in that game, and he might not be the last to arrive. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi, Noni Madueke, Christian Norgaard and Cristhian Mosquera have also joined this summer, while Ebere Eze could yet arrive from Crystal Palace before deadline day.
"Let's see what happens in terms of where the squad is in the next few weeks, but we are actively looking at options, as well there are a few players maybe that they have to leave as well so we'll be open to see what happens," Arteta said when asked about new signings. Among those expected to leave is Fabio Vieira, with Stuttgart looking at taking him to the Bundesliga.
