Bangladesh Government Gifts 3-Day Holiday to 10 Lakh Employees in July, Muharram Moon Sighting Marks Start of Islamic New Year

Good news for over 10 lakh government employees in Bangladesh! The government has officially declared a three-day holiday in the first week of July, bringing joy and celebration across departments.

Here's Why:

• Ashura, a significant Islamic observance, falls on Sunday, July 6, which is already a public holiday.

• Government employees in Bangladesh typically have Friday and Saturday as weekly holidays.

• This creates a long weekend from July 4 (Friday) to July 6 (Sunday).

The holiday announcement came after the Islamic Foundation confirmed the sighting of the Muharram moon on Thursday, June 26. With this, the Islamic New Year (1447 Hijri) officially began.

Ashura and Its Significance:

Ashura, observed on the 10th day of Muharram, holds deep religious meaning, especially for the Shia Muslim community. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala. Imam Hussain’s stand against tyranny and injustice is remembered through processions, prayers, and mourning rituals.

Long Holidays Not New for Bangladesh Employees:

This isn't the first time the Bangladesh government has delighted its workforce:

• 10-day holiday during Eid-ul-Azha (June 5–14).

• 9-day holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr earlier this year.
