Russia's S-400 Triumph air defense system is considered one of the most modern and powerful air defense technologies in the world. It is designed to destroy air threats with long-range missiles. This system can intercept enemy fighter aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and even ballistic missiles. Countries like India, Turkey and China have already purchased this system.
How much does one S-400 missile cost? Many types of missiles are used in this system and the cost of each missile is different. According to information, the cost of an S-400 missile can range from $3 lakh (about Rs 2.5 crore) to $1 million (Rs 8.3 crore). The cost of some long-range missiles like 40N6E goes up to $1-2 million.
Which missiles are there in S-400?The S-400 system consists of four major missiles:
- 48N6E3: 250 km range high-speed missile
- 40N6E: Longest range missile with 400 km range
- 9M96E and 9M96E2: Short range missiles, low cost and fast reaction capability
Of these, 40N6E is considered the most expensive and powerful.
Why are these missiles expensive?S-400 missiles are not just a piece of steel and gunpowder. They are equipped with high-tech sensors, precise navigation, electronic guidance and advanced engines. This system can track multiple targets simultaneously and fire missiles accordingly. High technology and research costs are also involved in making them. This is the reason why the cost of a missile reaches several crores of rupees.
How can a cheap drone be stopped by an expensive missile?Recently, many experts on X (formerly Twitter) said that if a cheap kamikaze drone (such as the one worth $20,000) is shot down using the S-400 missile, it is a loss-making deal economically. That is, a missile worth Rs 8 crore is being spent to shoot down a drone worth Rs 20 lakh. Because of this, many countries are now focusing more on low-cost anti-drone systems.
What do deals like those between Türkiye and India explain?Turkey bought 4 S-400 batteries from Russia for $2.5 billion, which included about 144 missiles. On average, the cost of one missile comes to about $17.36 million, including launchers, radars and other equipment. Experts believe that the actual cost per missile is between $0.5 million and $1 million.
S-400 is cheaper than AmericaThe S-400 is considered cheaper than the US THAAD and Patriot systems. According to a CNBC report, a single S-400 battery can cost around $500 million, while the US THAAD battery costs up to $3 billion.
