Drivers on the A1 faced major delays after a two-vehicle crash near Gateshead this morning (Monday). Emergency services had raced to the scene on the A1 southbound between Junction 68 and 67, and police said motorists should expect delays and use "alternative routes where possible". However, the incident is now cleared the road has fully reopened.
The A1 is the main major road for traffic heading north and south around Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland and Middlesbrough and traffic is already building in the area since the collision happened at 8.15am this morning (Monday). A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 8.15am today, we received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1 southbound in Gateshead between junction 68 and junction 67.
"Emergency services are in attendance. Motorists should expect delays and use alternative routes where possible."
A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called to a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 between junction 67 and 68 at 8.31 on 12 May. We dispatched one double crewed ambulance and two patients were treated and discharged at the scene."
