Drones chaos hits UK as flights delayed after sighting at major airport

Flights have been delayed at one of Britain's major airports after a drone was spotted near an "exclusion zone". Police Scotland are investigating the incident at Edinburgh Airport.

It's understood the drone neither entered the airfield or was above the runway, as per Edinburgh Live. It comes hot on the heels of a number of airport shutdowns in Europe due to drone sightings, including in Denmark, Norway in September. Munich Airport in Germany also suspended flights after several drones were sighted last week.

There's no indication yet of who was behind today's incident.

People caught flying a drone inside the flight hub's restriction zone can be hit with up to five years in prison and an unlimited fine.

An Edinburgh Airport spokesperson told the Herald: "Flights were held due to the presence of a drone within the exclusion zone, which police investigated.

"It is imperative that drone operators are aware of their responsibilities and are aware of the flight restriction zones and potential penalties.

"The safety of passengers and staff is always paramount," they added.
