Michael Cain is one of Britain's most beloved and respected actors, and it turns out his father was involved in one of the most famous episodes of World War 2. Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, which is also Cain's real name, was serving in the Army and was evacuated from the French coast in 1940 after being pushed back by invading German forces. Operation Dynamo was contrived to get them out, with a flotilla of civilian boats dispatched to bring the men back home.
It has featured in many films about the conflict, such as "Darkest Hour", for which Sir Gary Oldman won an Oscar for portraying Winston Churchill, and Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" in 2017. Cain has appeared in eight of the British-American director's movies. During an appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show before the picture's release, Cain told of talking to his father after he arrived home. Ross asked:"Will you be working with him again?" Cain replied: "I don't know.
"I read he's got a new movie coming out about Dunkirk.
"I'm a bit old for a soldier in Dunkirk. I could be an old age pensioner who went in the boats and rescued them."
He added: "My father was at Dunkirk. I remember when he came back. I said, 'What was it like, dad?' He said, 'Don't go there.'"
Ross laughed and said: "There you go. A man a few words, but they all counted."
Cain agreed, saying: "He was a man of very few words."
It is thought that around vessels of various sizes sailed out to rescue Allied forces during the operation.
Admiral Bertram Ramsay directed the operation, who had retired before the war, but was recalled in 1939.
He and his staff worked in a room deep in the Dover cliffs, which that had once contained a dynamo, a type of electrical generator.
This gave the operation its name, according to the Imperial War Museum.
The evacuation began on May 26, and the last British troops were evacuated on June 3.
French forces heroically held the line to cover their escape.
