Scotland has been battling a significant litter issue, reportedly worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic. The country's urban areas have borne the brunt of the problem, with Dundee and Glasgow being dubbed the filthiest spots in the nation according to a report from Keep Scotland Beautiful.
However, other regions of Scotland have been praised for their cleanliness. Shetland has been crowned as the most pristine place in Scotland. The new data reveals that an impressive 98.7% of public spaces on the archipelago are predominantly free of litter - the highest percentage in the country. This honour allows Shetland's main port of Lerwick to lay claim to the title of Scotland's cleanest town.
As the largest settlement on the island group, housing a population of around 7,000, it serves as the perfect starting point to explore this remote part of Scotland, reports Daily Record.
Almost halfway between Bergen in Norway and Aberdeen, Lerwick boasts a unique culture. Its quaint lanes and laid-back atmosphere make it an ideal holiday destination.
Some of the top attractions include the Iron Age broch of Clickimin and the Shetland Museum.
Meanwhile, visitors can embark on orca watching trips in the surrounding seas or stay on land to observe the captivating marine life around the islands.
Lerwick even has its own beach, Bain's, just a stone's throw away from the town centre.
If you're after a more secluded spot, the Shetland Mainland boasts numerous hidden beaches. Sumburgh, nestled on the island's southern tip and just a half-hour drive away, is famed for its breathtaking white sands.
Further south, you'll find Spiggie Beach. Its crystal-clear waters have been likened to those of a Greek island, albeit with a slightly cooler climate.
After a day of exploring, unwind with a meal or drink at one of Lerwick's many pubs or restaurants. The Lounge Bar, hailed as the top bar on TripAdvisor, provides live music for its guests.
For foodies, No 88 Kitchen and Bar comes highly recommended. This local gem dishes up an intriguing blend of Scottish, British and Philippine cuisine.
Let's not forget there are plenty of bars and pubs for travellers to go and explore.
