Robins face a challenging time feeding themselves in autumn. Their natural food supplies start to diminish this time of year, but households can easily come to the aid of these vulnerable little birds before the weather turns.
As berries and insects become increasingly scarce, robins run the risk of not gaining enough weight to withstand the brutal conditions of winter. When September rolls around, the animals must begin accumulating fat reserves to endure winter whilst simultaneously moulting their worn feathers. This demanding process requires extra energy and nourishment.

The wildlife specialists at Beaky Bites have shared how straightforward it is to feed robins food that's nutritious and delicious.
Peanuts, alongside sunflower hearts or seeds, contain abundant fats. They're high calorie food sources, which is precisely what robins will be needing.
However, it's crucial to remember that robins cannot consume salted food. Their bodies can't process salt, leading to dehydration, kidney failure or even death.
Birds should only be fed natural and unprocessed food due to their sensitive digestive systems, so ensure you're only offering raw peanuts and seeds to robins.
"Peanuts and sunflower hearts are healthy options robins love. These foods provide the proteins and fats they need. Sunflower hearts are particularly nutritious and are a robin favourite during breeding season."

"You can offer peanuts and sunflower hearts by scattering them on the ground or in platform feeders. These foods are not only healthy but also very attractive to robins so add them to your feeders to increase interaction from robins."
These provisions will supply robins with the vital energy and protein necessary to develop more plumage, which helps them maintain warmth and shield them from frost.
Once you've got your bird-friendly peanuts, they'll need to be chopped up or crushed into small pieces. Robins have soft beaks and struggle to crack open nuts, and whole peanuts could pose a choking risk for smaller birds.
Then, simply scatter the peanut pieces on a low surface in your garden like a tray or table, and you'll find robins returning time and again, allowing you to enjoy plenty of these stunning birds this autumn.
An expert explained: "Robins prefer ground feeding, which means they will feed from trays placed on the ground or directly off the ground itself amongst the grass. This is how they naturally feed and makes them feel more comfortable and safe."
If you're looking to purchase food for robins, they're particularly fond of dried mealworms, as these insects are packed with the nutrients and proteins they would naturally consume in the wild.
You can also offer robins suet pellets or balls, made from animal fat, which are perfect for helping robins build up their fat reserves and maintain their energy levels to survive the impending cold weather.
