Steve Davis has expressed his amazement at sustained success, labelling the prolific world championship winner an "enigma" of the sport while he hunts for an unprecedented eighth Crucible title. Currently three frames from securing a semi-final spot at the , O'Sullivan leads Si Jiahui 10-6 as they head into the evening session. The seven-time world champion has dominated the snooker scene for years, sharing the limelight with fellow icons and Mark Williams as part of the formidable 'Class of '92'.
This trio has amassed 100 ranking titles, 39 Triple Crown victories, and claimed a total of 14 world championships between them. Williams narrowly triumphed over Higgins in a gripping quarter-final encounter on Wednesday, setting himself up for a potential final match-up with O'Sullivan - who is lining up to claim a semi-final berth on the other side of the draw.
Davis, a six-time world champion himself, has previously praised both Williams and O'Sullivan, dubbing them "exceptional" contributors to snooker. During a chat with fellow retired snooker star Stephen Hendry on his Cue Tips YouTube channel in 2024, Davis acknowledged the 'Class of '92's' enduring excellence as the defining feature distinguishing them within the sport.
Speaking in April 2024, the 67-year-old said: "Ronnie O'Sullivan and Mark Williams are really exceptional, weird people. Which one of the three of the Class of '92 are going to crack up first?
"They are so good, and they've been so good for so long that they've given us the opportunity to enjoy which one of them is going to crack up first."
Davis then claimed that Higgins might be the first to falter due to his relative lack of "weirdness", adding: "The other two are enigmas. You can't understand Ronnie O'Sullivan and you can't understand Mark Williams. How is he still winning? It's stupid."
As Davis had previously suggested, Higgins has exited the World Snooker Championships at the hands of Williams, while O'Sullivan remains a strong contender. O'Sullivan is set to face Jiahui for the second time on Wednesday at 7pm, aiming for a victory to secure his place in the semi-finals.
With O'Sullivan potentially meeting Zhao Xintong next, Williams is preparing for his own semi-final clash, possibly against either Judd Trump or Luca Brecel later in the week.
