Salmon is a great option for a delicious light dinner, that is also packed with plenty of health beenfits. The fish is a great source of protein that has an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, and can be cooked fairly quickly. There are plenty of things that salmon can be enjoyed with including roasted vegetables, a salad, potatoes, the list goes on.
It can also be cooked in various ways such as in the oven, the air-fryer, or being pan fried. Many people opt for frying their salmon in the pan with a bit of oil to ensure they end up with a cooked fillet that has perfectly crispy skin. However, home cooks online said swapping out oil for this one common ingredient will have your salmon tasting so much better.
While many people might choose to add a bit of butter to their fish while cooking it with oil, people on Quora have suggested skipping out on the oil and just sticking to butter.
It comes as one home cook asked if it is "tastier to pan fry salmon using butter or olive oil?"
The majority of those who responded suggested that it depends on "personal preference". However, if you looking for flavour then butter is one you want to choose.
One person explained that butter "adds a rich, creamy taste that complements the natural flavours of salmon" while refined olive oil has a "milder flavour compared to butter."
Lorraine Moore wrote: "Both delicious, but different. Butter obviously has that unctuous flavour, and few things can compare to the taste something fried in butter."
According to Laura Booth, a kitchen manager and caterer, olive oil should only be used if your recipe calls for it, if not then butter is the way to go.
Some people, including Mike Oheron, shared that they use a combination of the both because the olive oil has a higher smoke point than butter.
He wrote: "I use butter and olive oil often. And often use both at the same time. Butter has a great taste, but a low smoke temperature. Olive oil does not, (to me anyway), taste nearly as good as butter. However it has a high smoke temperature. When you mix the two, you get the taste of the butter. Also by mixing the two you raise the smoke temperature."
Salmon can still be cripsy when fried in butter, and so to achieve results that give you both great flavours and a nice crisp then try using butter without the oil next time you prepare a salmon dish.
