According to a food storage expert, cucumbers will last longer in the fridge with one . the fruit from going "squishy" or decaying quickly, and it just requires one basic kitchen cupboard essential.
Chris Hassall, expert at , shared a paper towel trick that helps remove excess moisture from the fruit, which he explained helps give it a Instead of keeping the cucumber in the plastic wrapping from the supermarket, he recommended using paper towels instead, and storing it in the part of the fridge with the lowest humidity.
Chris said: "To help cucumbers last for longer, store them in the fridge wrapped in a paper towel. This helps to remove excess moisture, preventing it from going off.
"Always store salad items such as cucumbers and tomatoes in the drawers of your fridge as the humidity is higher here, helping to retain your cucumber from going squishy."
However, he advised keeping veggies and fruits separate in the drawer to achieve the best shelf life.
Chris explained: "Always use the crisper drawers for storing fruit and vegetables. Just make sure to keep them separated as some salad items and fruits can produce gas that makes vegetables rot at a faster pace."
When it comes to for the next day, Chris recommended the best layering method to keep salad items fresh.
"Always pour the dressing first, to avoid this making the salad leaves soggy. Follow with heavy ingredients such as peppers, cucumber or onion before adding proteins and softer salad items on top such as sweetcorn and salad leaves.
"Salads can last between 3-4 days in the fridge, as long as they are stored in an airtight container."
If you want to slice up some cucumber and store it in the fridge, Chris also advises covering them in water, but "make sure to change the water every two to three days to keep them fresh" until use.
