In his message, PM Modi wrote:
“Tributes to Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on his martyrdom day. He displayed incomparable courage and manliness to keep the integrity of the country intact. His invaluable contribution to nation building will always be remembered with reverence.”
Balidan Divas, observed every year on June 23, commemorates the death anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, who died in 1953 under unclear circumstances while in custody in Kashmir. He was then protesting against the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370, demanding its complete integration with India. His arrest and untimely death sparked national outrage and remain a significant event in India’s political history.
Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, a former Union Minister and the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh (the ideological predecessor of the present-day Bharatiya Janata Party), was known for his fierce nationalism, deep intellect, and relentless efforts to uphold India’s unity. A barrister, academician, and Parliamentarian, he left behind a legacy of ideological commitment to a united India that continues to shape the country’s political discourse.
The Prime Minister’s tribute reaffirms the government’s recognition of Dr. Mukherjee’s sacrifices and his critical role in shaping post-independence India. It also serves to remind the citizens of the ideals of patriotism, integrity, and courage that Dr. Mukherjee embodied.
Balidan Divas stands as a solemn reminder of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee’s ultimate sacrifice for national integration — a cause that continues to inspire millions across generations.
