NEW DELHI: The student accused of raping a woman on the campus of a top management school in Kolkata has admitted to purchasing sleeping pills and mixing them into cold drinks and water offered to the woman before the alleged assault, according to a senior police officer, quoted by PTI.
“The accused had admitted to having bought sleeping pills and spiked the cold drinks and drinking water which he had offered the woman when she was there,” the officer told PTI. “But he could not clarify what the real intention was behind doing all these to a woman who went to him for counselling. He is not answering this question.”
Police said the woman, after consuming the drink, went to a room in the boys’ hostel where the alleged rape took place. The accused later called a friend and described the incident while walking in the verandah outside the room, according to investigators.
Police have found discrepancies in the accused student’s statement and are probing various aspects of the case, including the background of the woman, who claimed to be a psychologist.
“She could not place any documents supporting her qualifications as a psychologist. She has not disclosed which institution she attended. We are yet to get information about her chamber and any prescription having her name and other details,” the officer said.
They are also examining whether the woman’s family was under pressure to change their statement. “We are trying to find out whether the family was under pressure... and whether there was any financial transaction behind this change of statement,” the officer added.
Kolkata Police have formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an Assistant Commissioner to investigate the case. The accused, Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain, was arrested on Friday night after the woman filed an FIR at Haridevpur Police Station. He has been remanded to police custody until July 19.
Speaking to ANI, the police prosecutor said the accused had claimed the act was consensual, but medical evidence supported the woman’s account. Meanwhile, the accused’s mother said, “My son is innocent... He will never do such a dirty thing.”
