The men's basketball team defeated TCU 78-74 on Monday, marking the beginning of Master P's time at the University of New Orleans. In the viral videos, coach P could be seen shouting with the players in the midst of the celebration. P is utilizing his entertainment connections to increase publicity in addition to contributing his NBA experience and skills to the UNO.
On Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lakefront Arena, the University of New Orleans Privateers will play Sacramento State. The program is concentrated on expansion and drawing in new supporters, according to Percy "Master P" Miller, president of UNO basketball operations.
Coach P brings new hope to New Orleans basketball during a tough time
UNO finished 4-27 in the previous season. Due to an NCAA investigation involving sports gambling, four UNO players were suspended during the season. For fiscal year 2024, the UNO athletic department as a whole had a $4.62 million shortfall.
Miller has been actively promoting the program since it was announced in February. He has done this by obtaining co-signatures from other celebrities and wearing UNO items in public.
This year, Coach P has remained composed and showed compassion throughout the game.
In the locker room, UNO celebrated the win with a mosh pit and a Gatorade shower for head coach Stacy Hollowell. During the jubilation, Coach P also shouted victory.
Coleton Benson scored a team-best 22 points and grabbed six rebounds while playing in his home state, falling one board short of his career high. His four 3-pointers slowed down TCU's surge at crucial times. With 15:49 remaining in the game, he made a 25-footer to give the Privateers a 17-point advantage. Twenty seconds later, he made another triple to make it 55-40.
Meanwhile, MJ Thomas, a native of Denton, was effective off the bench for UNO, making a flawless 5-of-5 from the field to score 10 points and grab seven rebounds. With 6:54 remaining in the half, Thomas' dunk and Kedrick Osby's steal and fast-break flush gave UNO a 20-point advantage, its biggest of the half. Osby scored eight points and pulled down two rebounds in the first half of his Privateer debut.
A quiet storm brews in New Orleans as the Pelicans are set to make a comeback
Due to injuries, notably to star power center Zion Williamson, the Pelicans finished second to bottom in the West at 21-61 after losing the final seven games of the regular season.
Trey Murphy III, a forward, stated:
“We are definitely in a spot where we need to win games.. We are not happy with what’s going on right now. We are going to have to go out there and fight and compete.. That’s the biggest thing. It’s not about how you start.. It’s how you finish…”
Murphy finds solace in the notion that, as a rookie in the 2021–2022 season, the Pelicans ended strong to just make it to the play-in round before moving on to the playoffs, despite starting 1–12.
Dumars made some roster adjustments this past off-season, but he has doubled down on frequently injured Williamson as New Orleans' franchise player. Free-agent additions Jordan Poole, Kevon Looney, and Saddiq Bey are new players with starting or more significant reserve roles. In addition, he selected guard Jeremiah Fears with the seventh overall pick before moving back into the first round to select Derik Queen with the thirteenth overall pick.
