New Delhi, April 21, 2025 — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave alert for Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR), forecasting high temperatures soaring past 40°C for the next five days. The intense heat is part of a broader pattern of extreme weather sweeping across northern and central India.
Delhi to Endure Prolonged Heatwave ConditionsThe IMD bulletin released Monday highlights that from April 21 to 25, central India is expected to witness persistent heatwave conditions. Similarly, from April 22 to 26, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Punjab may experience scorching temperatures accompanied by hot and dry winds.
For Delhi-NCR, temperatures have remained steadily high, with the maximum reaching between 38°C to 40°C and the minimum hovering around 25°C to 26°C — significantly above seasonal averages. On Tuesday, the capital is expected to witness clear skies with partly cloudy conditions by evening, along with occasional surface winds at speeds of 10-20 km/h.
Temperature Set to Rise Further Mid-WeekBy Wednesday, Delhi is likely to see a further spike in mercury levels, with maximum temperatures expected between 40°C to 42°C and minimum temperatures ranging from 25°C to 27°C. Morning surface winds are predicted to blow from the northwest at 10-15 km/h, gradually increasing to 20-30 km/h by afternoon. By nightfall, wind speeds are expected to taper off.
The IMD has urged residents to take necessary precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and wearing light, breathable clothing to mitigate heat-related health risks.
Contrasting Weather in Eastern and Southern IndiaWhile northern India braces for a heatwave, the eastern states are likely to see heavy rainfall. Between April 21 and 26, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Assam and Meghalaya. Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive significant precipitation from April 22 to 26, while Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura may witness intense showers on April 21 and 23.
Southern states are also set for varied weather conditions. Isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds ranging from 30-50 km/h are expected in Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and Mahe. A particularly heavy spell of rain is forecast for Kerala and Mahe on April 21.
As India faces the dual challenges of heatwaves in the north and torrential rain in the east and south, authorities are on alert, urging citizens to stay informed and take weather advisories seriously.
